Kota Kinabalu- September 2013

Benoy, the global firm of Architects, Masterplanners, Interior and Graphic Designers, is behind the latest project set to transform the city of Kota Kinabalu in Malaysia. The plans for Tanjung Aru Eco Development were announced by the Chief Minister of Sabah at the Malaysia Day Golden Jubilee celebration on 16 September, emphasising the importance of the scheme to regenerate the area for future generations.Tanjung Aru Eco Development Masterplan

Tanjung Aru Eco Development marks Benoy’s first project in the exotic state of Sabah. Positioned as the ‘Gateway to Sabah, Borneo’, the beachfront site spanning 260 hectares will establish a unique and vibrant precinct in one of the country’s fastest growing cities. Located next to the Kota Kinabalu International Airport, the development has been designed as a premier tourism destination and a residential community; forging together distinct character areas, treed beaches, public parks, resort hotels, beach clubs, marinas, entertainment, recreation and dining.

Simon Blore, Global Managing Director, commented, ‘Tanjung Aru Eco Development is a significant scheme for Benoy, not only as our maiden project in Sabah but also for the opportunity we have been given to shape and transform one of Malaysia’s favourite cities. Our aspiration behind the design has been to create a precinct that is unique in its quality and sense of place and that is imbued with a set of principles that will guide the future of this new district’.

Fair Rubber Price

What we want

The aim of the Fair Rubber Association is “to contribute to an improvement of the working and living conditions of the primary producers of natural latex rubber by applying the principles of Fair Trade to the trade in products made from natural rubber”

This is a quote from the constitution of the association. But what does this mean in reality?

Fair Rubber is good for the people

Participation in Fair Trade should be an option, particularly for the primary producers of natural rubber, the rubber tappers and small rubber farmers. But the low price paid for raw materials, make it impossible for the tappers, plantation workers and small farmers to support themselves and their families with their own labour.

This is where Fair Rubber wants to help. Paying a Fair Trade premium to the primary producers would ensure that even during periods of depressed world market prices, the costs of production would be covered and the suppliers would have a surplus. Crucially this would allow them to improve their working and living conditions. The decision as to how they would spend the Fair Trade premium, of course, remains with them.

Fair Rubber ist good for the environment

Agrochemicals used in the production of natural rubber are less controversial with regard to any residue in the final rubber products. It’s more that their use threatens the health and wellbeing of the people involved in the production and processing of the natural rubber.

Fair Rubber supports the production of Fairly Traded rubber in as sustainable and environmentally-friendly a manner as is feasible. Wherever possible, the producer partners are supported in getting their production certified according to the standards of the Forest Stewardship Council FSC. This includes a monitored compliance with minimum social standards.
